■ SHOBI’s Support for International Students

    Assist international students with issues such as enrollment and graduation procedures, life in Japan, and visa trouble. Support is available in Chinese, Korean, English, and Japanese. Assistance with Japanese language study is also available.

    The CAREER CENTER provides information and support for students preparing for job applications. A huge number of opportunities are available, including information on part-time jobs, auditions, as well as assistance in learning the proper techniques for your job search.
    We provide scholarship programs specifically for international students. By taking advantage of these scholarships, international applicants can reduce their tuition up to 300,000 yen upon admission.
    Students who have graduated from SHOBI’s two-year course curriculum are eligible to transfer to the third year at the Comprehensive Music Department. It is also possible to transfer for the third year at Shobi University’s four year program.
    As SHOBI is selected as a "suitable school", international students are able to granted a student visa for 2-years and 3-months.
    The monthly dorm fees are 53,000 yen per month, including two meals par day.
  7. EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students)
    If an international student achieves a superior score in the Japanese language portion of the EJU prior to entering SHOBI, they are able to receive a study incentive grant scholarship. This scholarship consists of a 48,000yen per month stipend and is provided for one year. Eligibility for this scholarship is determined by the requirements of the “Monbukagakusho Honours Scholarship for Privately Funded International Students” which is provided by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO). Study materials for the EJU are also available at the International Exchange Center.



  • SHOBI is located in the center of downtown of Tokyo. It is close to the famous Tokyo Dome, La Qua, and Bunkyo Ward's Civic Hall, and has easy access to Tokyo hot spots such as Shinjuku, Shibuya, Tokyo, Akihabara, Ikebukuro, and Aoyama. SHOBI is accessible by four subway lines and one JR line.
  • SHOBI is a well-established educational institution with ninety one years of history.
  • SHOBI is an accredited professional training college. Upon graduation, students of two-year course will receive a diploma (postsecondary course). Students who graduate from the four-year Comprehensive Music Academy will receive an advanced diploma (postsecondary course).
  • SHOBI is equipped with the latest state-of-the-art professional equipment, film studios, non-linear editing classrooms, vocal recording studios, instrument recording studios, master recording studios, pre-production studios, sound design studios and specialized production studios. All are available for students to utilize.
  • SHOBI's BUCA performance studio, the concert hall, Vario Hall, and the live house, LUCE provide students a place to experience a variety of performances. Students can also use a number of dance studios, full-sized professional recording studios, as well as practice rooms.
  • For students studying to become professional musicians, SHOBI provides them the top-quality instruments. The concert hall and BUCA have Steinway and Bensendolfer grand pianos for concert recital practices and performances, and all practice rooms are equipped with Yamaha pianos. World class brasses are also available at SHOBI.

1) Entrance Scholarship for International Applicants (Only for New Students)*
International Students are given a special 100,000 yen exemption from their enrolment fee at the time of registration. They must submit the “Application for International Student” and must be interviewed by staff at the International Exchange Center.

  1. Application Period: October 10, 2017 – March 3, 2018
  2. Amount Awarded: 100,000 yen
  3. This scholarship can be jointly received with all other SHOBI scholarships.

2) AO Entrance Scholarship
Applicants who apply to SHOBI through the AO Admission Application are eligible to receive this scholarship. For further information please see the 2018 AO Admission Guidebook.

  1. Amount Awarded: 200,000 yen
  2. This scholarship can only be received jointly with the Entrance Scholarship for International Applicants.

3) International Student Support Scholarship*
This scholarship is awarded to international students to ease the economic burden of tuition fees so that students may concentrate completely on their studies. Applicants should write about their past experiences and how they relate to their study goals and future inspirations.

  1. Application Period: June 6, 2017 – March 3, 2018 (MUST BE RECEIVED BY THIS DEADLINE)
  2. Application found on pages 11 and 12 of the International Student Application Forms brochure.
  3. Recognition and Scholarship Amount;
    Recognition I (150,000 yen exemption from tuition fees)
    Recognition II (100,000 yen exemption from tuition fees)
  4. This scholarship can be jointly received with the Entrance Scholarship for International Applicants and the Japanese Study Grant.

4) International Student Special Recommendation Scholarship*
Students that receive a recommendation from a SHOBI designated Japanese language school are eligible to receive this scholarship. There are two opportunities available for students to applying for admission to be eligible for this scholarship, one in October and one in January.

  1. Target: Students who have received a recommendation from a Japanese language school designated by SHOBI.
  2. Amount Awarded: 200,000 yen
  3. This scholarship can only be jointly received with the Entrance Scholarship for International Applicants.

5) Japanese Study Grant*
Students that have attained a sufficient amount of Japanese language ability are supported with this grant. Money will be awarded based on the level and score of the Japanese language exam taken and will go directly toward payment of admission fees. If all fees have been paid prior to be awarded the grant, the amount will be returned to you or go towards reducing installment payment fees.

  1. Japanese Language Exam Grade and Score Requirements;
    JLPT N1 or N2 (Past JLPT Level 1 and 2 are also accepted)
    EJU’s Japanese Language Section with a score of 200+ points
    BJT Business Japanese Proficiency Test with a score of 400+ points
  2. Application: Please submit the application form found on page 18 of the International Student Application Forms brochure as well as a copy of the original certificate of the relevant examination result.
  3. Application Period: October 1, 2017 – February 28, 2018
  4. Amount Awarded: 50,000 yen
  5. This scholarship can be jointly received with the Entrance Scholarship for International Applicants, the International Student Support Scholarship, and the Honor Student Scholarship(“A”Recognition).

6) Honor Student Scholarship
This scholarship is for applicants who have already had experience, knowledge, or technical training in their major fields. Applicants should show evidence that they have won prizes in competitions or auditions, received official certification, and/or have exceptional skills and knowledge.

※You are eligible to apply for the Honor Student Scholarship before or after you apply for admission to SHOBI, however you MUST have applied for admission by January.

  1. Required Forms: Please submit the application found on page 14-16 of the International Student Application Forms brochure. Also make sure to submit all proper documents required for admission into your chosen department. Your eligibility will be determined using these documents.
  2. Results will be announced within a week after each screening.
      “SA” Recognition (Full tuition will be exempted for entrance year)
      “A” Recognition (Half tuition will be exempted for entrance year)
  3. The “SA” Recognition Scholarship can be received jointly with the Entrance Scholarship for International Applicants. The “A” Recognition Scholarship can be received jointly with the Entrance Scholarship for International Students and the Japanese Study Grant.

7) Advancement Scholarship
Upon recommendation by their department heads, students with superior grades are eligible for a tuition reduction when they move into the next grade.
